Renewal Requirements
1. The
cost is $25.00 to renew. (Check made out to Treasurer of Virginia) and send to Cheryl McLean.
Certificates must be renewed every 5 years. New DOE requirement:
Please advise Cheryl McLean of your CURRENT
teaching grade level or assignment. This is necessary before
submitting paperwork to the Department of Education!
2. If
you have a Provisional License, then you must complete the
requirements listed by the Virginia Department of Education. They allow you
three (3) years to do this. There are NO extensions allowed on
Provisional licenses. If you do not meet the requirements within the
three-year period, then when you decide to do so, if the criteria/guidelines
have changed, you will come under the new criteria/guidelines.
3. If
you have a Collegiate License, which means you have a Bachelor’s
Degree, then you must earn 3 college credits (90 points) in your
content area, by taking a course that you have not taken before and the
other 90 points can be earned through workshops/in-services/conferences/etc.
as long as you have documentation of hours, days, times, etc. A total of
180 points are needed to renew your license.
4. If
you have a Professional License, which means you have a Master’s or
Doctoral Degree, (a total of 180 points are needed to renew your license)
all points may be earned through college courses or all
points may be earned through workshops, in-services, conferences,
etc., or all points may be earned through a combination of
both.
5. All
points are only good for 5 years.
6. Renewals must
be claimed on the DOE Individualized Renewal Record, available on the DOE
website at: www.pen.k12.va.us pages
33-34 of the Renewal Manual.
7. You
must send a copy of your VIRTUS certificate and the technology requirements
signed by your school’s technology coordinator!
FINALLY, if you do
not keep your license renewed, and the criteria
changes, when you decide to renew, you must come under the new criteria,
which means instead of getting 180 points to renew, you may also have to
take additional classes. You are not grandfathered in once you let your
license expire.
