Pathways for Catechist Formation

For Catechists: Getting Started - PARISH Level

1. Begin the PATHWAYS for Catechist Formation process at the PARISH level. Select the Self-Evaluation Guide for adults, youth, or children appropriate for your ministry setting. You may choose either to print the guide or view the guide and resources online and use the Response Form to complete the guide.

2. Select a mentor with the assistance of your parish catechetical leader. Share your progress with your mentor as you work through the self-evaluation guide.

3. Your catechetical leader/youth minister will assist you in obtaining the resources you need. See the Resource List attached to the Self-Evaluation Guide.

4. Share your completed Self-Evaluation Guide with your mentor and catechetical leader/youth minister. They will complete the Affirmation and Witness page.

5. Your pastor/pastoral coordinator will then write his or her affirmation on the Affirmation and Witness page and your catechetical leader will mail or email the entire completed guide to the Office of Christian Formation.

6. Your Self-Evaluation Guide will be read, approved, and signed by a staff member at the Office of Christian Formation. You will receive a Certificate of Recognition signed by the Bishop naming you as a Catechist for the Diocese of Richmond, and a catechist pin for each level of PATHWAYS for Catechist Formation you complete.

7. Catechists are asked to complete both PARISH & SENIOR levels to meet the diocesan certification norm.
