What We Do

The Office of Christian Formation serves the Bishop and the People of God of southern Virginia in fulfilling the Church’s mission to evangelize, to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ into every human situation. It does this by developing, supporting and connecting catechetical leaders.

To fulfill this mission the OCF provides opportunities for catechetical leaders to increase their competence and create networks of support. The OCF provides resources and events for formation of catechetical leaders in the Church’s vision of adult catechesis as the focal point of all parish catechesis. Catechetical leaders develop competence and confidence at a variety of levels when they utilize diocesan opportunities such things as the New Leader Institute, the Pastoral Ministry Leadership Formation programs,  http://www.loyno.edu distance learning opportunities, the Sullivan Conference for Catechetical Leaders.

In addition to this focus on adult formation, the OCF supports faith formation for all children and youth. This support includes catechist formation, consultation and resource materials. The OCF also provides formation for adult leaders of teens, annual retreats in various locations for teens, and an annual Diocesan Youth Convention.

The OCF is committed to excellence in catechetical ministry for all who hold and teach the Catholic faith. Through both gathered and non-gathered offerings as well as through the self-directed PATHWAYS for catechist formation program, the OCF staff assists catechetical leaders and the bishop as together we share the ministry of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.
