The Office of
Catholic Education held its first Upper Room overnight
retreat/workshop for leadership training on August 6-7, 2010 at
Jubilee House in Abingdon, Virginia.
The event was
designed for volunteer leaders in our Western Vicariate parishes and
for those interested in formation to prepare them for effective
parish catechetical or youth ministry, especially in smaller parish
settings. The retreat/workshop team included: Emily Filippi, Katie
McMaster, Bernadette Harris and Melanie Coddington.
The Upper Room
was
designed to be both spiritually enriching and practical; providing
opportunities for prayer, theological reflection and discernment, as
well as skill-based sessions useful to leaders in catechetical and
youth ministry. The workshop provided a basic foundation in the
areas of Theology of Ministry, Nature & Purpose of Catechesis,
Communication Skills, Forming & Nourishing “Volunteers”,
Catechetical Planning, Whole Community Catechesis, and more. The
Christian Formation budget subsidized this event to make this
opportunity more affordable for all.
The attendees made
up a diverse group from 15 different parishes in the western
vicariate including LPA’s 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.
The next Upper
Room will be held November 5-6, 2010 at the Roslyn Retreat
Center in Richmond. For more information, contact Bernadette Harris
at 804-622-5157.
