In 1997 Bishop Sullivan wrote the following statement on the
updating of the manual.  Little did any of us know at that time
that it would be available to everyone on the internet.

Congratulations on your initiative to publish a revision of the young adult ministry "How To" at the time of the release of the U.S. bishops document Sons and Daughters of the Light: A Pastoral Plan for Ministry With Young Adults. 1

It is my hope that you will continue to develop this manual as you implement the plan in all the regions of the diocese and with all ethnic groups.  As the meaning of the goals in the pastoral evolve in the Diocese of Richmond, we all want to invite many young people in participate in their implementation.

I want to reiterate a statement in the section Message to Young Adults:

We know that your talents and those of other young adults can enrich the church and be a sign of God's presence in society.  We invite you to share them with us and become part of a welcoming community for other young adults as well.

I am aware that the passage of the Pastoral happened twenty years - to the date- since the first convocation in the Richmond Diocese called to address the needs of young people in their late teens, twenties, and thirties.  We need to continue this ministry with new insights from the pastoral which are adapted in your  "How To" manual.  It is good that the format is such that new processes can be added as they evolve in the various regions of the diocese.

This publication is available to you from the United States Catholic Conference for information click on http://www.usccb.org/laity/ygadult/toc.shtml
