The links on this page are intended to help religious educators with activities, lesson plans, reflections and prayers around a particular topic.  The primary emphasis is on teaching and formation tools, not on content.  If you would like to know more about this particular topic, please visit the OJP issues web page or use any good search engine.

There are two categories of resources in the table below.  Download means either that there is a downloadable document or that the text on that web page can be copied and pasted into your own document.  Online means that the activity is interactive and must be done on the computer.

Trading Trainers

This is a simulation game for older students (Age 13+) about globalization by using the examples of poor families making “trainers” (i.e. sneakers, athletic shoes) and still being poor.  It includes extensive directions which will need some “translation” into American terms.

The Paper Bag Game

A simulation for ages 9+  using a situation from India about how hard it is to get ahead.  It includes some hands-on manufacturing of small paper bags out of newspaper.  If you have trouble getting to the whole unit through this link, hit ESC and it should go into the pdf format displaying the whole unit. The unit does not include directions how to make a paper bag.  You need to devise that yourself.

This 25 page resource "Fair Trade and Our Buying Choices"  deals with Fair Trade.  It includes stories for the reasons behind the Fair Trade movement as well as the future of the Fair Trade movement.  For those interested in Fair Trade, there is a wealth of background information as well as resources for learning more.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

This website contains a great deal of information about poverty in the United States.

When it comes to discussing minimum wage vs. fair wage, the poverty tour gives some idea of what families are up against if they are living on minimum wage.

This website has several campaigns around economic justice issues in the U.S.  It includes worship materials as well.  Notably there are resources for Living Wage Worship Services and Events.

United Nations Cyber School Bus

This is a unit for students grades 5-12 on poverty.  Each unit has four sections: explanation, class activity, service project, internet connections.  There is a lesson on work and economic security.
