Pope Benedict XVI will be addressed as “pope emeritus” in retirement
Vatican spokesman, Father Lombardi, announced that Pope Benedict XVI will be addressed as "His Holiness, Benedict XVI," with the addition of the title "pope emeritus" or "Roman pontiff emeritus." The word "emeritus" indicates someone who has served honorably and has retired from that service but has retained his title.
Benedict XVI has left the papal apartments in Vatican City and will reside at the villa Castel Gandolfo until the monastery that will be his new home has been made ready.
The "fisherman ring" and papal seal of Benedict XVI will be broken, and he will return to wearing the episcopal ring that he wore as a Cardinal.
